A shared public health crisis demands our collective, ongoing awareness.

If you’ve noticed a green ribbon this month or seen the number 988 shared online, you’ve encountered a marker of Suicide Prevention Month. Every September, mental health organizations amplify the message that suicide is preventable and that mental health support is available.
But the truth is, the pain that leads to suicide doesn’t follow a calendar. It doesn’t only surface in September and fade in October. Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death in the U.S., affecting people of all ages, backgrounds, and demographics. Its aftermath leaves shock, anger, guilt, and profound grief in its wake, rippling through families, friends, and communities.
Because suicide is rooted in a sense of unbearable isolation, it paradoxically becomes a deeply shared public health problem. That’s why the mission of suicide prevention must extend far beyond 30 days. It must become part of our daily lives—a commitment to understanding, recognizing warning signs, and fostering human connection every single day.
The Power of a Single Conversation
Sometimes the most powerful tool in suicide prevention is the simplest: conversation. Breaking the silence around suicidal thoughts is the first and most critical step. Many hesitate to ask a loved one if they are thinking of suicide, fearing they might “plant the idea.” This is a dangerous myth. Research consistently shows that asking someone directly, in a caring and non-judgmental way, can reduce anxiety, open doors to help, and save lives.
Speaking with a trained mental health counselor is an excellent first step if you’re unsure how to start these conversations. You don’t need all the answers—you just need the willingness to listen and connect someone with professional mental health support.
The Lifeline of Connection: 988 and Beyond
A cornerstone of this effort is the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, a network of over 200 local crisis centers providing free, confidential, 24/7 support. Call or text 988 to reach a trained counselor.
Special attention must also be given to LGBTQ+ youth mental health, who face disproportionately high suicide risk. Tailored, culturally competent care is critical, and continued support and funding for these services is essential. Advocacy can help ensure these specialized resources remain available.
A Network of Support
In addition to the 988 Lifeline, several confidential resources are available for immediate mental health support:
- Veterans Crisis Line: 1-800-273-8255, press 1
- Trans Lifeline (U.S.): 1-877-565-8860 | Canada: 1-877-330-6366

Moving Forward, Together
Suicide prevention is not the sole responsibility of professionals; it is a community responsibility. It’s in checking on a friend who’s gone quiet, listening without judgment to a colleague, and advocating for mental health policies.
This September, let awareness spark action. Learn the warning signs, ask the difficult questions, and remind everyone that they are not alone. Connection is the antithesis of despair—it is our most powerful tool in saving lives.
If you are struggling, please reach out. You are worth it.
